Tecmo Super Bowl is a classic American football game for the Sega Genesis, offering a mix of arcade action and strategic play. Featuring real NFL players and rosters, the game lets you play quick games or lead your team through the season to the Super Bowl.
The view is from the top down (overhead, top-down, side-view 2D), the field and players are displayed as 2D sprites.
You can choose to play single-player to control the entire team or in coach mode, you just choose the tactics and let the computer control the players.
Each team has a playbook with offensive options (run, or throw the ball - pass), usually with 4 running and 4 throwing (depending on the team). You choose the play before the ball “snaps”.
On offense: you can control the QB to throw or run, or control the running back if the play is run. On defense: you choose the player you want to control, and control him to tackle, block the ball, prevent the opponent from advancing.
In addition: can kickoff, punt, field-goal, perform onside kick, conversion after touchdown, full basic NFL rules.
Exhibition (single match): play a quick match between any 2 teams, suitable for quick play or practice.
Season (full season): you choose a team, and lead it through the regular season, then playoffs, with the goal of taking the team to the Super Bowl. Can play multiple seasons (e.g. 1991, 1992, 1993) if you want.
All-Star, Pro Bowl: the strongest teams from 2 conferences fight each other, creating a confrontation between the "excellent team".
2-player support: you can play with friends in versus mode.
